Novy Zamek

The Buquoy family erected the New Palace (also called the Chateau) in the years 1801 – 1810 as their main family seat. The Chateau was constructed within the existing and much older park.  It was made in Empire-style following French examples. The ground floor housed the kitchens and servant quarters. The reception hall, theatre, staterooms, and living quarters of the family were on the first floor. The second floor mainly consisted of guest rooms.

Modry salOf the staterooms, especially the Blue Room warrants attention. This dome-like high room extends into the second floor. Its walls are covered in light-blue striped linen, giving the roomy impression of a large tent. Inspiring is also the in-house theatre, one of the biggest in Bohemia. In 1822, a smaller area here was used as performance place. In 1846, the theatre was reconstructed into a full-blown palace theatre for an audience of 320! Today, it is one of three remaining Empire-style palace theatres in the Czech Republic.

After the end of the war in 1945, the Chateau was confiscated along with all other properties of the Buquoy family. Today, it is the property of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It’s Institute of Systems Biology and Ecology, in cooperation with the Institute of  Physical Biology (University of South Bohemia) has established here a high-ranking innovative centre of Biosciences and Biotechnology.
